Flanders DC (Flanders District of Creativity), Le Vif Weekend, Knack Weekend and MAD (Brussels Fashion and Design Platform) are joining forces to put established names and emerging talent from the Belgian Fashion industry in the spotlight. The world sees Belgian fashion as unique, avant garde and professional. With this in mind, we thought it was about time to show off the different aspects of the Belgian fashion industry by introducing the first Belgian Fashion Awards. It is a one of a kind initiative for Belgium and will take place during Fashion Talks 2017 on the 16th of November. There will be seven awards handed out in the following categories:
THE JURY PRIZE:
will be awarded to a designer to honor his or her entire career.
DESIGNER OF THE YEAR:
will be granted to a designer whose work stood out in the year of 2017.
EMERGING TALENT OF THE YEAR:
will be given to a promising upcoming talent or label that has already released one or a couple of collections.
PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR:
will be awarded to a fashion industry professional who is not involved in the design process but has had a remarkable year.
ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR:
will be handed to a Belgian based fashion entrepreneur who has had a successful year.
FASHION BRAND OF THE YEAR:
will be granted to one of the 24 labels chosen by our jury. The nominees are elected on the basis of having distinguished themselves from other brands in the fashion industry. The winner, however, will be the label that received the most votes from the public. Voting is possible as from the 27th of October on the special website dedicated to the awards, which you can find on www.levifweekend.be and www.weekend.be.
MOST PROMISING GRADUATE:

The jury consists of representatives from Flanders DC (Nathalie De Schepper and Ann Claes) and MAD Brussels (Elke Timmermans and Alexandra Lambert), fashion journalists Anne-Françoise Moyson and Ellen De Wolf and editors-in-chief of Le Vif Weekend and Knack Weekend (Delphine Kindermans and Ruth Goossens). International buyers Pascaline Smet, Aude Gribomont and Geert Bruloot will also be part of the jury together with Allison McGreal, founder of The Fabric Sales and AMG suits, international fashion journalist Angelo Flaccavento and Elisa De Wyngaert who is a curator at the MOMU.
FOOTNOTE REGARDING THE AWARDS:
Ann Claes, Senior Project Manager at Flanders DC: “The fashion industry connects creativity with entrepreneurship. Every aspect of the industry should be given a place in the spotlight by receiving recognition from the sector itself but also from the bigger public. With the ‘Ik Koop Belgisch’ campaign, we give Belgian based brands the recognition they deserve. The Belgian Fashion Awards should take this recognition a step further.”
Ruth Goossens, chief editor at Knack Weekend: “Knack Weekend strongly supports Belgian fashion. We show this by releasing our ‘Mode dit is Belgisch’ edition twice a year. We hand out the awards with two partners who share our passion for Belgian fashion, which makes it all the more prestigious. There’s no other Belgian initiative like this”
Delphine Kindermans, chief editor at Le Vif Weekend: “For our magazine, Le Vif Weekend, this unique Belgian event is a way to strengthen our DNA. We have been supporting young designers for over 35 years. We already hand out an award at the Designer of the Year election. With the Belgian Fashion Awards we want to support Belgian fashion designers as well.”
Alexandra Lambert for MAD Brussels: “By taking part in the Belgian Fashion Awards we have a chance to value Belgian fashion and give the people of the industry the professional recognition they deserve. There are so many Belgians in the fashion industry with a remarkable career, even though it is not an easy road to take. A lot of fashion designers have been through a rough journey to get to where they are right now. With the awards we want to help create national but also international acknowledgement around the brands.”
